Weingut NIGL, KREMSTAL, Austria

Here’s a quick report on the early-bottled ‘21s fro m Nigl. I don’t know if or when I’ll receive the top wines, but tasting these was a lesson in managing acidity, and (yet) another lesson in the sometimes-existential distinction between tasting and sipping.

As these were shipped before the top wines of 2021 were bottled, this little collection consists of the everyday and mid-level wines. I do hope to taste the big boys at some point. My sense is that Nigls are firing on all cylinders recently.

If there was a winery where I always thought the DI tastings were a year too soon it was Nigl. When I was smart enough to buy the wines I thought could be excellent I was always rewarded with them being even better. They always needed (still do) more time than nearly anything else.
